How to get the nation back to the gym

Pre-COVID, the UK fitness industry was healthier than it had ever been: more gyms, more members and a greater market value than ever before. Lockdown shut the industry down and had wildly differing effects on different parts of the population varying from those doing more exercise than before to those doing much less than normal. As lockdown eased, gyms implemented robust programmes of hygiene and distancing measures and comms programmes to communicate their readiness for a return. Despite their efforts the return was patchy at best.

More worryingly, the time out of the gym gave people a chance to reset, learn new habits, and question if they ever want to go back. If gyms want to reattract their lost members they will have to do more than merely be hygienic. They will have to be innovative and show why they are an essential part of a hybrid fitness model.

Gyms must double-down on their core benefits: social interaction and expertise in exercise.
